Medal commemorating Vernon's attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), wearing hat (left), facing to right; left hand extended, right receiving the sword which 'DON BLASS', on left knee before Vernon, offers with his right hand, hat in extended left. Small ship (right), sailing to right. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'THE . PRIDE . OF . SPAIN . HUMBLED . BY . AD : VERNON'. Exergue: Ornament of lion's head between branches with leaves. N in 'DON' is reversed. Reverse: View of a circular harbour, edged with houses. Narrow entrance, with one fort right and two left. Three ships inside, one in entrance and four outside. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'HE . TOOK . CARTHAGENA . APR . I . 1741'.Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and a disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
