Medal commemorating Vernon's attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), wearing hat (left), facing to the right; left hand extended, right receiving the sword which 'DON BLASS', on left knee before Vernon, offers with his right hand, hat in extended left. Small ship (right), sailing to the right. Legend: 'THE PRIDE OF SPAIN HUMBLED BY ADML VERNON'. N in 'DON' reversed. Reverse: Two ships sailing to right towards a fort in right foreground; two forts in middle connected by a chain boom, behind which is a boat; above it 'DON BLASS'. In background a city in a straight line; steeple, left, pointing at first A of 'CARTHAGENA'; tower, right, pointing at A in 'APRIL'. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'HE TOOK CARTHAGENA APRIL 1741'. A disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. In the event, the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
