Obverse: Full-length figure of Vernon, wearing hat, (left), facing to right; left hand extended, right receives the sword which 'DON BLASS', on left knee before Vernon, offers with his right hand, left on hip. Commodore Charles Brown stands behind Blass, with a baton in his right hand. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'THE . PRIDE . OF . SPAIN . HUMBLED . BY . AD : VERN . N'. Exergue: 'AND . COM : RE BROWN .' Reverse: View of the port. Six ships in two diagonal lines of threes, only half of the right-hand one showing. A small vessel in entrance and five boats inside. Tower and steeple pointing at letters AL and last N of 'VERNON'. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'PORTO . BELLO . TAKEN . BY . ADMIRAL . VERNON . WITH . SIX . SHIPS . NOV . 22 . 1739'. All Ns reversed. Exergue: 'I W'. A disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. In the event, the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
