Medal commemorating Vernon's attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), wearing hat, (left), facing to right; left hand extended, right receives the sword which 'DON BLASS', on left knee before Vernon, offers with his right hand, hat in extended left. Sir Chaloner Ogle, bareheaded, standing behind Blass, baton in right hand, left on hip. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'THE . PRIDE . OF . SPAIN . HUMBLED . BY . AD . VERNON'. Exergue: 'AND SR CHAL OGLE'. Reverse: Two ships sailing right towards a fort in foreground; two forts in centre connected by chain boom, behind which a boat; above it 'DON BLASS'. In distance city in straight line. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'THEY TOOK CARTHAGENA APRIL 1741'. A disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. In the event, the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
