Medal commemorating Admiral Vernon's capture of Porto Bello, 1739, and Chagres, 1740. Obverse: Half-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) (three-quarter left), baton in left hand, right extended to edge of medal near beginning of legend, which is enclosed by line. Fort with steeple, (left), above it inscribed 'FORT CHAGRE'. Legend: 'PORTO . BELLO . TAKEN . BY . ADMIRAL . VERNON :.' Ns reversed. Reverse: View of the port. Six ships, placed irregularly, sailing to left, except lower left-hand one. Right-hand lower one cut in half by edge of medal. Four small vessels inside harbour. Well-marked water lines everywhere. Tower pointing at letter N and spire left of rosette. Line enclosing legend. No exergue. Legend: 'WITH . SIX . SHIPS . ONLY . NOV . 22 . 1739 .' Ns reversed.
