Medal commemorating Vernon's attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), three-quarter left, right hand extended, baton in left, point of sword touches mast of vessel behind him. Fort with small vessel below it, to the right, and same on the left. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'ADMIRAL . VERNON. THE . PRESERVER . OF . HIS . COUNTRY'. Reverse: Bird's-eye view of two projecting points of land forming a strait in the centre of the medal. The point on left has three forts marked 'BOCACHICA', 'S . PHILIPS', 'IAGO'. Above the strait an island with fort marked 'S . IOS' in foreground two ships sailing right and three small vessels sailing left; above, one small vessel sailing left. Legend: 'TOOK CARTHAGENA'. Exergue: '1741'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and a disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
