Medal commemorating Vernon's attack on Cartagena and proposed attack on Havana, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), (three-quarter left), sword upright in right hand, left on hip. Small cannon pointing left, behind Vernon, his right foot standing on the long trail. Ship (right), sailing right. Inscription below a castle with three towers (left): 'HAVANAH'. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'ED : VERNON ESQ : VICE ADMIRAL OF THE BLUE'. Reverse: Four ships are sailing right, towards the entrance of a port between two forts (right). City and church with steeple on a hill (left). Leaf ornament below the water. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'VERNON : CONQUERD : CARTAGENA'. Exergue: 'APRIL I : 1741'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and a disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741.
