Medal commemorating Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) and Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle (1681?-1750), the attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Two full-length figures: Vernon (left) facing three-quarter right, wearing a hat; baton in his right hand, the left extended. His legs are crossed. Ogle (right), facing to the left, wearing hat, baton in left hand, the right extended. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'ADL . VERNON AND SR CHALONER OGLE TOOK CARTHAGENA'. Exergue: '1741'. Reverse: View of semicircular harbour with a forts on either side of the entrance. Two ships, three men in a boat, one ship entering and two others outside. Inscription (over the boat): 'DON BLASS'. No line enclosing legend. Legend: 'SPANISH INSOLENCE CORRECTED BY ENGLISH BRAVERY'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and a disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
