Medal commemorating Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) and Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle (1681?-1750), the attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Two full-length figures, Vernon (left), facing three-quarter right, wearing hat; baton in right hand, the left extended. Ogle (right), facing left, baton in left hand, the right extended. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'ADMIRAL VERNON AND SR CHALONER OGLE'. Exergue: Shell and two leaves. Reverse: View of Cartagena harbour, two ships sailing to right, towards a fort. Two forts in centre connected by chain boom, behind which is a boat. Inscription (above boat): 'DON BLASS'. Flagstaff in centre of city at E, spire O.O. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'TRUE BRITISH HEROES TOOK CARTHAGENA'. Exergue: 'APRIL 1741'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and a disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
