Medal commemorating Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) and Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle (1681?-1750), the attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Admiral Vernon (left) facing left, face front in a cocked hat, baton in right hand, and Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle (right) face profile left, without a hat, a baton in left hand; both standing on a platform. Legend: 'ADMIRAL . VERNON . AND . SR . CHALONER . OGLE'. Exergue: Concave shell and small scroll. Reverse: View of Cartagena harbour, two ships sailing to right towards a fort. Two forts in centre connected by a chain boom, behind which is a boat. Inscription (above boat): 'DON BLASS'. Flagstaff E.S., spire second O. Legend: 'TRUE BRITISH HEROES TOOK CARTHAGENA.' Exergue: 'APRIL 1741'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and a disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
