Medal commemorating Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) and Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle (1681?-1750), the attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Two full-length figures. Vernon (left), facing three-quarter right, wearing hat; baton in right hand, the left extended. Ogle (right), facing left, baton in left hand, the right extended. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'ADMIRAL VERNON AND SR CHALONER OGLE'. Exergue: Symmetrical scroll. Reverse: Two ships sailing to right. Fort (left). Two forts in centre are connected by a chain boom, behind which is a boat. A city is shown in the background. The line enclosing the legend forms a complete circle; the annular space between the extremities of the legend is filled in by seven leaves with spiral line at each end. Legend: 'BY BRITISH COURAGE TOOK CARTHAGENA APRIL 1741'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and a disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
