Quest Expedition (1921-22), and topographical views of Rio de Janeiro

Black loose page album with 55 photographic prints and postcards mounted with glue. The album also includes one newspaper cutting from the Daily Mail, dated 31 January 1922 relating to the death of Sir E. Shackleton; a loose print of Sir E. Shackleton; and a signed menu-card dated 7 December 1921 for a dinner in Rio de Janeiro held in honour of Shackleton and the expedition.

37 prints in the album relates to the outward-bound voyage of the Quest and her repair by Wilson Son & Co at Rio de Janeiro in 1921. It includes deck scenes, crew photographs and images of the France (1911), a 5-masted steel Barque. Also included are images of Frank Wild, Sir E. Shackleton, and Scout Patrol Leader James W. S. Marr. The final section relates to postcards of Rio de Janeiro and its environs.

The album was purchased at auction from a relative of Bob Sharpus, who compiled the album when in the employment of Wilson & Son at Rio de Janeiro. As some of the images were taken on the outward voyage it is not certain how he came to have copies.
