Medal commemorating the Battle of Cape Finisterre and Admiral Lord Anson's voyage, 1740-44. Obverse: Bust of Anson (left), hair short, no drapery, crowned by Victory standing behind on the prow of a galley. Legend: 'GEORGE LORD ANSON VICT . MAY III MDCCXLVII.' Reverse: Victory, holding a wreath and a trophy, stands upon the back of a sea-monster, over a small globe. Placed around are six laurel wreaths, inscribed each: 'KEPPEL, SAVMAREZ, SAVNDERS, BRETT, DENNIS, CAMPBEL.' Legend: 'CIRCVMNAVIGATION.' Near lower edge: 'MDCCXL.-MDCCXLIV.' Commissioned as a memorial after Anson's death, probably by his elder brother and heir, Thomas Anson.
