Medal commemorating the bombardment of Algiers, 1816. Obverse: The bust of the Prince Regent (left), laureate. Richly chased armour, Ribbon of Garter over left shoulder, Golden Fleece round neck. Over left shoulder a cloak with Stars of Garter, Thistle, St Patrick, and Ste. Esprit of France. Legend: (outer) 'TO TAME THE PROUD THE FETTER'D SLAVE TO FREE' (inner) 'THESE ARE IMPERIAL ARTS AND WORTHY THEE.' Exergue: 'GEORGE PRINCE REGENT.' Reverse: General view of the bombardment. The crescent in the heavens over the town. Exergue: 'ALGIERS BOMBARDED ITS FLEET DESTROYED & CHRISTIAN SLAVERY EXTINGUISHED.' (Between oak and palm branches) 'EXMOUTH AUG . 27 1816'. One of only four struck (Kenneth Douglas-Morriss). A gold example awarded to Lord Exmouth is on display in the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth.
