A daguerreotypist
A hand-coloured lithograph depicting a commercial daguerreotypist who is showing his camera to a gentleman. The client is hidden under the camera's hood, giving the salesman the opportunity to flirt with his wife. The use of the camera in this image is a modern twist on the old satire of the philosopher or connisseur being distracted while his (usually younger) wife considers more earthly pleasures [see for instance ZBA4477].
