Optics Plate VIII
A hand-coloured engraving of optical insruments including telescopes and a camera obscura, engraved for the Encyclopedia Londinensis in 1820 as part of its treatment of optics. George Biddel Airy, the Astronomer Royal, recalled that he owed much of his early education in optics and the other sciences to this encyclopaedia. He described it in his Autobiography as "a work which without being high in any respect is one of the most generally useful that I have seen".
