Daniel Colwal Armiger Musai Regalis Societatis Fundator
Portrait of Daniel Colwal (or Colwall), a merchant and philanthropist. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on 16 January 1661, and was at various times a council member treasurer. He became a vice-president of the society in 1682. He was a governor and benefactor of Christ's Hospital School The inscription celebrates Colwal's donations to the Royal Society's collections, leading to him being considered the founder of its museum. The image is similar to the frontispiece to Nehemiah Grew's 'Museum regalis societatis' (1681), which Colwal helped fund.
