Medal, Barnburgh's Memento. Obverse: A soldier standing, clasping the hand of a sailor, seated on the barrel of a gun; behind, Victory, wings outstretched, holding a wreath in either hand over their heads. Reverse: Legend and inscription: 'BARNBURGH'S MEMENTO TO ALBERT SMEATON (name incuse) FOR SERVICES WITH HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES 1914-1919'. Fitted with a loop and ring.
Albert Smeaton (1893-1940) was born in Barnburgh near Doncaster, the son of Benjamin Smeaton, quarryman. He worked initially as a farmer's boy and at the time he joined the York and Lancaster Regiment in 1916, his occupation is given as coke oven worker. He married Jane Chester in 1921 and by 1939 was a widower working as a colliery yardman.
