Medal commemorating the Charter of Devonport, 1824. Obverse: Neptune standing in a sea-car drawn by two horses, his trident in his right hand, pointing towards the town and harbour in the distance (right) and Fame flying above, a scroll in her left hand inscribed 'Devonport', blowing a trumpet. A profile portrait of George IV shown on th front of the car. Legend: 'PORTUS ET ARA TUIS' (A haven and place of shelter for your mariners). Reverse: Inscription, 'IN GRATEFUL COMMEMORATION OF THE CONDESCENSION OF HIS MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY GEORGE IV, WHO CONFERED (sic) UPON THE TOWN FORMERLY KNOWN AS PLYMOUTH DOCK THE NAME OF DEVONPORT ANN. DOM. MDCCCXXIV'.
