Medal commemorating the Royal Naval Temperance Society
Medal commemorating the founding of the 'Reindeer' Temperance Society. Obverse: Starboard broadside view of full-rigged ship under sail. Legend 'ROYAL NAVAL TEMPERANCE SOCIETY'. Reverse: Within an olive wreath the inscription, 'INSTITUTED ON BOARD H.M.S. REINDEER JULY 1868'. Members of temperance societies agreed to abstain from alcohol. The original 'Reindeer' Temperance Society was expanded to a Royal Naval Temperance Society, covering the whole of the service, in 1871.
