Medal commemorating the 'Ouzel Galley' Society, 1700
Medal commemorating the 'Ouzel Galley' Society, 1700. Obverse: A ship with English flags, sailing before the wind; below, the motto 'STEADY.' Legend: 'OUZEL . GALLEY .' Reverse: A figure of Justice, holding in her right hand a sword, and in her left a balance. Legend: 'CUIQUE . SUUM.' (To each his own.) In 1700 a complicated legal case involving a vessel called the 'Ouzel Galley' in the Port of London was referred to arbitration by merchants. They came swiftly to a good decision and on the basis of this example a society of Dublin merchants was formed to arbitrate in commercial disputes. The costs decreed against the parties involved were paid to charity.
