Nelson Testimonial Medal
Testimonial medal depicting the Trafalgar Square Monument. Obverse: Nelson's bust, (left), natural hair, tied in nape. Full uniform, ribbon over left shoulder and a small fancy star on left breast. Legend, (on a garter): 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY.' Reverse: View of the monument, looking towards the National Gallery. Legend: 'TO COMMEMORATE THE OPENING OF THE NELSON TESTIMONIAL TRAFALGAR SQUR.' Exergue: '21 OCTOBER 1844.' The Testimonial Medal was presented to 357 Greenwich Pensioners who had served at Nelson's four major actions, with a gratuity of ten shillings. The ceremony was originally planned to take place in Trafalgar Square but was cancelled twice due to bad weather and complaints from local tradesmen. It eventually took place at the Royal Hospital, Greenwich on 2 April 1845. The Testimonial Committee of the Parishioners of St Martin's funded the award.
