Medal commemorating the Sailors' Home, Liverpool. Obverse: Head of HRH Prince Albert (right). Legend: 'HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCE ALBERT'. Reverse: Inscription (between two foul anchors), 'FOUNDATION STONE OF THE SAILORS HOME LAID BY H. R. H. PRINCE ALBERT JULY 31. 1846.' The Sailors Home, designed by John Cunningham was paid for by public subscription and intended to provide cheap and clean accommodation for seamen away from drink and prostitutes. The building was demolished in 1974.
