Medal commemorating the Plymouth breakwater and lighthouse. Obverse: View of the breakwater, lighthouse, hills and shipping in the distance. Legend: 'THE BREAKWATER LIGHTHOUSE WAS COMMENCED 1842. ERECTED UNDER THE SUPERINTENDANCE OF WILLIAM STUART. C. E. COMPLETED 1844.' Exergue: 'DESIGNED BY WALKER & BURGESS ENGINEERS.' Reverse: Inscription, divided by a plan of the breakwater, 'COMMENCED UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE ADMIRALTY 12TH AUGT. 1812 LENGTH 7,100 FEET. STONE DEPOSITED 3, 638,646 TONS. COST £1, 500,000. THIS MEDAL IN COMMEMORATION OF THE PLYMOUTH BREAKWATER WAS STRUCK BY ORDER OF W. STUART, SUPERINTENDANT ENGINEER. AFTER A CONNECTION OF 37 YEARS WITH THAT UNDERTAKING 22ND. AUGT. 1848.'
