Sledge section

Sledge section. A piece of wood, the upper two edged of which are rounded, a groove with curved edges is cut in each side and a rectangular slot is cut across the bottom. On a label: '(1) SECTION OF A "SLEDGE" PROPOSED BY MR SCULLARD IN 1877.' This is very possibly Mr Joseph Scullard, senior foreman of the Royal Naval Dockyard at Portsmouth. The sledges for Nares' Arctic expedition were made there in 1875.
