Medal commemorating the Siege of Gibraltar, 1727. Obverse: View of Gibraltar besieged by the Spanish fleet. Legend: 'VINCERE AVT MORI.' (To conquer or die.) Exergue: 'GIBRALTAR OBSESSA D . XXII . FEBR . MDCCXXVII.' (Gibraltar besieged 22 February 1727.) The first two words are placed between two parallel lines, while a third runs behind them midway between the other two. Reverse: Inscription, 'SED DATVR TERTIVM MINVS PERICVLOSVM ABIRE.' (But a third and less dangerous alternative is offered, to retire.)
