Medal commemorating Earl Spencer, First Lord of the Admiralty (1758-1834). Obverse: Lord Spencer's bust (left), tie-wig, coat, ruffle and cloak over right shoulder. Legend: 'EARL SPENCER FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY.' Exergue: 'APPOINTED MAR . 2 . 1795.' Reverse: Fame, holding a wreath in her right hand, leans against a ship's rudder and blows a trumpet. A foul anchor at her feet. Legend: 'DECORI DECUS ADDIT AVITO.' (He adds fame to his ancestral glory). Exergue: 'UNDER WISE COUNSELS THE BRITISH NAVY TRIUMPHS . MDCCXCIX.'
