The 'Mechanics' Magazine and Journal of Science, Arts, and Manufactures', Volume 49 (1 July-31 December 1848), page 451, records the ship was the first of a new line of steam ships to run between London and the Mediterranean. The 60HP auxilary engines were made by Messrs Maudslay, Sons, & Field. The ship achieved 9.5 knots during trials along the measured mile in Long Reach, the Thames.
