A long-handled ice axe.
A long-handled ice axe. It has a wooden handle of oval section. The steel head has a pick on one side and a horizontal blade on the other. The head is mounted by two brackets onto the haft. The lower end is capped with a metal band and has a spike protruding from the end.
There is a silver-plated label near the head, held in place by four pins, inscribed: 'Edith M. Parish / Souvenir / Ice axe used during the / Antartic [sic] Expedition / of the Ship "Discovery" 1901-1904.'
