Medal commemorating the SS 'Great Eastern'. Obverse: Bust of the engineer Brunel (three-quarter left). Legend: 'ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL BORN 1806 . DIED SEP . 15, 1859.' Reverse: Starboard broadside view of the six-masted screw and paddle steamer 'Great Eastern' under sail and steam, square rig on the after-fore, main and after-main masts, and fore and aft rig on the mizzen and jigger. Legend: (outer) 'THE GREAT EASTERN STEAM SHIP'; (inner lines) 'SCREW, PADDLE AND SAIL, FOUR DECKS, WOULD ACCOMODATE 10,000 TROOPS.' Exergue: '692F . LONG . 83F. WIDE, HEIGHT OF HULL 60F. 24,000 TONS BURDEN, 2,600 HORSE POWER.'
