The ships depicted on the reverse are supposedly Deliverance and Patience, the ships made by the survivors of the wreck of the Sea Venture in 1609. The Sea Venture had been part of the Third Supply mission to the Jamestown colony in Virginia, but its compliment were stranded on Bermuda for 9 months after it was wrecked. Deliverance and Patience were made from salvaged parts of the Sea Venture and Bermuda cedar.
