Counter commemorating Queen Elizabeth I. Obverse: Bust of Queen Elizabeth I crowned in ruff, necklace and brocaded gown (three-quarter right). Reverse: The royal arms of England and France quarterly within the Garter, crowned, with supporters. Inscription on a cartouche below: 'QVI . LEO . DE . IVDA . EST . ET . FLOS . DE . IESSE . LEONES . PROTEGAT . ET . FLORES . ELIZABETHA . TVOS.' (May Juda's lion and the root of Jesse, protect thy lions and thy flowers, sweet Bess). On scroll: 'DIEV ET MON DROIT' On garter: 'HONI SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE.' In a glazed frame with loop. This portrait was copied from the miniature of the Queen by Isaac Oliver, and the dress shown is the one in which she attended the State service at St Paul's Cathedral, to mark the defeat of the Armada. Said to be stamped in imitation of engraving.
