Commemorative medal presented to Jonas Hanway by the Marine Society. Obverse: Within a circle Britannia, her spear and shield laid aside, standing instructing a ragged youth (right), a building behind, naval gear (left) and inscription, 'Presented by the Marine Society to Jonas Hanway Esq. as a Token of the High Sense they Entertain of his Public Spirit in Proposing & Methodizing & his Unwearied Assiduity in the Execution of this Design.' Reverse: A foul anchor in centre and inscription: 'The Marine Society Instituted in London July 1756 During the War with France & Spain Clothed & Fitted out by Voluntary Subscriptions for the Service of the Royal Navy 5452 Landmen as Seamen & 4787 Boys to be Bred Seamen and Provided for all the Boys who Applyd (sic) to them After the War Ended in 1762.' Inscribed on edge: 'R H Robert Lord Romney Chairman. John Thornton Esqr Treasurer'.
