Halfpenny token commemorating John Wilkinson, ironmaster
Halfpenny token commemorating John Wilkinson, ironmaster. Obverse: Bust of the ironmaster in a tie-wig. Legend: 'JOHN WILKISON IRON MASTER.' Reverse: Port broadside view of a brig or a snow, possibly representing Wilkinson's oveseas trade. Exergue: '1792'. Inscription (on edge): 'PAYABLE IN ANGLESEY, LONDON OR LIVERPOOL'. (N's reversed). This particular example is a counterfeit; Wilkinson tokens always bear the words 'WILLEY SNEDSHILL BERSHAM BRADLEY' and were only produced in 1788.
