Medal commemorating the battles of Heligoland Bight, 1914, and Dogger Bank, 1915. Obverse: Two oval medallions one above the other, joined by a knot. The upper shows a sinking cruiser, above '28 AUG 1914'. Exergue: 'MAINZ SINKING'. The lower medallion with a ship on her side, above '24 JAN 1915'. Exergue: 'BLÜCHER SINKING'. Two smaller medallions at the sides, on the left the 'LION' shown steaming to the right. Above a flagstaff with an Admirals's flag and scroll inscribed 'BEATTY'. On the right 'ARETHUSA' steaming to left with a flagstaff above with a Commodore's broad pennant and inscription 'TYRWHITT'.
