Next of Kin Memorial Plaque. Uniface: Britannia standing (half-right) holding a trident in her right hand and a laurel wreath in her extended left; at her feet, a lion (right). In the background, two dolphins and a branch of oak. At the base, a lion (left) devours an eagle. Legend: 'HE: DIED: FOR: FREEDOM: AND: HONOVR'; (on a rectangular plaque) 'WILLIAM WATERS'. Waters was Engineer Lieutenant in HMS 'Formidable' torpedoed, 1 January 1915. The ship was a pre-Dreadnought battleship of 1898 and the first Britsh capital ship sunk by submarine torpedo attack during the First World War.These plaques were issued to the relatives of those killed during it or dying as a result of the conflict within seven years of the cessation of hostilities. Waters left a widow and two young sons, both of whom became naval officers and served in the Fleet Air Arm during the Second World War. The elder, also Willliam, died in 1943 in an accident at sea: the younger, Lieutenant Commander David Waters (1911- 2012) was later Deputy Director of the NMM (1972-78) and presented this plaque to it in 1976.
