Next of Kin Memorial Plaque. Uniface: Britannia standing (half-right) holding a trident in her right hand and a laurel wreath in her extended left; at her feet, a lion (right). In the background, two dolphins and a branch of oak. At the base, a lion (left) devours an eagle. Legend: 'HE: DIED: FOR: FREEDOM: AND: HONOVR'; (on a rectangular plaque) 'HERBERT WALTER ELLWOOD'. These plaques were issued to the relatives of those killed in the First World War or dying as a result of the conflict within seven years of the cessation of hostilities.
Herbert Walter Ellwood (1878-1918) was born in Langham, Norfolk the son of a railway worker. He joined the Royal Navy on 15 April 1896 for twelve years, serving as a stoker. He married Clara Maria Massingham on 17 May 1905 in Langham and they had one daughter Ellen Edith. He transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve but returned to active service during the First World War. He died when HM tug 'Desire' was sunk by U-boat 'U34' off Filey, on 24 Jan 1918.
