Medal commemorating the Kara Sea Expedition, 1919. Obverse: Map of the Kara Sea on which is shown a starboard broadside view of a two-masted vessel at sea with an iceberg in the distance (right). Inscription: 'M.T.C 1919' (Merchant Trading Co); 'YALMAL PENINSULAR'; 'GULF OF OB' (left); 'NOVAYA ZEMLYA' (right). Legend: 'KARA . SEA . EXPEDITION'. Reverse: inscribed, 'AWARDED TO THE OFFICERS AND CREW OF THE S.S. BAYMINGO COMMANDER R. DOWLING'. Within a demi cable with anchors at either end and two crossed anchors below. The SS 'Baymingo' was chartered from the Hudson Bay Company by the Merchant trading Company to accompany a Russian expedition under Captain Vilkitski. The ship left Liverpool August 1st and returned to London October 19th.
