Medal commemorating the 'Ark Royal', long refit 1967 - 1970

Medal commemorating the 'Ark Royal', long refit 1967-1970. Uniface, a six-pointed star based on the campaign stars of the Second World War, bearing in the centre an embossed representation of the ship's crest (azure), the Ark, argent, crowned and on three wavelets, or within a wreath of rope surmounted by the naval crown and the name of the ship; 'ARK ROYAL'. Suspended by a ring from a plain crimson ribbon bearing eight bars sewn thereon; six of the bars bearing the name 'ARK ROYAL' and two 'EAGLE'.

Commander Guy Crowden was the Marine Engineer officer of 'Ark Royal' for the major refit to convert the ship to operate F4K Phantom aircraft. At the time it was the most extensive, and expensive, refit ever undertaken in a Royal Dockyard.
He had the medal struck and it was bought by crew members who had served on board for six months of the refit. The bars were issued for each completed six months service in 'Ark Royal' and her sister ship 'Eagle'. [Information David Woolley].
