Medal commemorating the bicentenary of explorer G.F. Rumphius (1627-1702). Obverse: Half-length figure of the explorer Rumphius with long hair (three-quarter right) in a robe, seated at a table with a spray of a plant and shells upon it. Exergue: 'PLINIVS INDICVS.' Inscription: 'CAECVS HABENS OCVLOS TAM GNAVAE MENTIS ACVTOS VT MEMO MELIVS DETEGAT AVT VIDEAT RUMPHIVS HIC VVITV EST GERMANVS ORIGINE TOTUS BELGA ADE ET CALAMO CETERA DICIT OPVS.' (Though blind, he had such shrewd mental vision that no one better could discover or perceive. Here is the portrait of Rumphius, who although German by birth was wholly Dutch in spirit; and for the rest his pen speaks for his work.) Reverse: View of the harbour of Amboyna with shipping and boats, buildings (right), mountains in background. Inscription, incuse above. Legend: 'IN MEMORIAM G . E . RVMPHII . II .
