Medal commemorating the SS 'Amstelstroom' torpedoed, 1917. Obverse: The German Emperor, dressed as Lohengrin, stands on the deck of a submarine shaped like a swan. Legend: 'DE "KAISER" OP 13 FEB . 1917-: AAN ONZE ZIJDE IS HET RECHT EN DE MORALITEIT OM DEZE TE LATEN TRIOMFEEREN MOET ELK BLANK WAPEN ONS WELKOM ZIJN.' (On 13 Feb 1917, the 'Kaiser' said: On our side is right and morality; to keep these triumphant we welcome a fight with the sword.) Reverse: In upper semicircle the 'Amstelstroom' sinking, her crew rowing away in boats. Three destroyers in the distance. Exergue (inscription in ten lines): 'HET STOOMSCHIP "AMSTELSTROOM" OP REIS VAN AMSTERDAM NAAR LONDEN IN DEN NACHT VAN 23 MAART 1917 DOOR DRIE DUITSCHE TORPEDOJAGERS ACHTERHAALD, BESCHOTEN EN GETORPEDEERD; DE ZEE-LIEDEN IN DE REDDINGSLOEPEN BESCHOTEN, GEWOND, GE-DOOD EN AAN HUN LOT OVERGELATEN.' (The steamship 'Amstelstroom', on her voyage from Amsterdam to London, in the night of 23 March, 1917, treacherously attacked by three German destroyers with gun and torpedo; the seamen in their lifeboats shot at, wounded, killed, and one of their children deserted.)

The medal was struck in Amsterdam in 1917 by order of Boudewijn Nierstrasz (1861-1939), Managing Director of the Holland Steamship Company (Nationale Stoomboot Maatschappij te Amsterdam) and Member of Parliament.
