Medal commemorating Admiral Jan van Galen (1604-1653). Obverse: Short bust of Admiral van Galen with long hair in armour and cravat (three-quarter left). Legend: 'JAN . VAN . GALEN.' Reverse: A scroll surmounted by a coronet flanked by coats of arms of the Admiralty (left) and those of the admiral (right) decorated with leaf-sprays, inscription: 'Zÿn scheepskroon van laurier Betaalde hÿ met bloedt Toenhem zÿnbeen ontviel Ontviel de Brit zÿn moedt 160L. ob . 23 . Mrt . 1653.' (For his naval crown of laurel he paid with his blood; when he lost his leg the Briton lost courage. 1604. Died 23 Mar 1653.)
