Obverse: Figure of Admiral Kortenaar, facing, in a cravat, long coat and bandolier, sword hilt showing standing on deck; his right arm akimbo, a baton in his left hand; the muzzle of a gun in front. Legend: 'EGBERT . MEEUWSZOON . KORTENAER.' Reverse: Starboard broadside view of a 17th-century battleship under sail, flying a large flag at the stern; the arms of Holland left, those of Rotterdam right. View of Rotterdam and shipping, the name of the city inscribed above. Legend: 'DE . HELT . DER . MAAS . VERMINKT . AAN . OOG . EN . RECHTERHANT . EN . ECHTER . T . OOG . VAN . T . ROER . DE . VUIST . VAN . T . VADERLAND.' (The hero of the river Maas, though wounded in the eye and right hand, still the pilot of [lit. the eye of] the rudderand fighter [lit. fist] for his country.)
