Medal commemorating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America, 1492-1892. Obverse: Within a deep moulding, a bust of the discoverer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) in high relief, in a cap and robe (three-quarter left). Legend: 'CHRISTOPHORVS . COLVMBVS . OCEANIAE . CLASSIS . PRAEFECTVS.' Reverse: Within a deep moulding a boatload of men approaching the shore (left), the discoverer standing in the bows; the 'Santa Maria' in the distance, two other boatloads leaving her side; a coat of arms in foreground. Exergue: 'MCCCCXCII. MDCCCXCII.'
