In the (right) foreground a young woman, in apron and shawl, faces (left) the sea and a wrecked sailing vessel, her left hand resting on a baulk of timber; before her flies a seagull. A short distance off the shore is a buoy. Reverse: Inscription, 'CONFÉRENCE INTERNATIONALE POUR LA SAUVEGARDE DE LA VIE HUMAINE EN MER. LONDRES - 1929. A.M.WALTER CARTER, LA DÉLÉGATION FRANÇAISE.'
