Medal commemorating the recovery of the sunken treasure ship at West-Kappelle, 1660. Obverse: Two wherries with men on board raising a sunken wreck; a three-masted vessel at anchor (right), distant view of West-Kapelle and shipping; above, the arms of M. Vander Goes with an inscribed ribbon: 'SOLI DEO HONOR ET GLORIA M . V . GOES.' (To God alone the honour and glory.) Below, the arms of Zeeland with supporters (a mermaid and merman). Reverse: Within a garland of laurel, entwined with an inscribed ribbon and coats of arms. Inscription: 'In memoriam rei Qua arte admiranda priorumq saeculorum cogitata superante, prope Valachros in pleno ac aestuanti mari, sub auspicijs Senatus Zelandici ac procurante Marcel . Goesio, e navi submersa ac disrupta, profundumq, sub arenis latitante immensa agenti, tum rudis tum signati, vis, gemmae plures, ac tormenta bellica subducta servata ac veteribus dominis ex jure restituta sunt 1660'. (A memorial of the admirable art surpassing the inventions of previous centuries by which under the auspices of the deputy councillors of Zeeland and the direction of Marcellus van der Goes, a great quantity of silver, coined and uncoined, precious stones and pieces of artillery have been raised up off Walcheren from a ship lost, destroyed and sunk in the sands, and have been returned to their proper owners.) The machine for this operation was the invention of one Trewleben.
