Obverse: Half-length figure of the Admiral Pedro Alvarez Cabral (three-quarter right), bearded, wearing helmet and armour with cloak over left shoulder, right hand resting on hilt of sword. Legend: 'PEDRO ALVARES CABRAL DESCOBRIDOR DO BRAZIL.' (P.A. Cabral, discoverer of Brazil.) Reverse: The arms of Brazil, with the year above each; (left) as Portuguese Colony, 1816; (right) as Empire, 1822; (centre) as Republic, 1889. Above on a ribbon: 'AO POVO LUSO-BRAZILIEIRO.' (To the Portuguese-Brazilian people.) Below centre, arms and crowned shield of Portugal, between 1500 and 1900. Legend (below): 'PORTO SEGURO DA ILHA DA VERACRUZ 3 DE MAYO.'
