Medal commemorating the destruction of the 'Emden', 1914. For three months, in 1914, von Müller commanded the 'Emden' as an independent commerce raider in the Eastern Indian Ocean. Badly damaged during an encounter with the Australian cruiser 'Sydney' off the Cocos Islands, 'Emden' was beached an her surviving crew, including Müller, were captured. A new 'Emden' was laid down in the same year.
