Reverse: Two nereids, the German Ocean, crowned (left), a harpoon in her left hand, and the Baltic Sea, wreathed (right), wading in water, clasping hands; a lighthouse (left and right). Legend: 'beg : 1887 NORD-OSTSEE-CANAL 1895 volld.' (Begun 1887 Baltic Sea Canal 1895 Full.) Exergue: Coat of arms, wreathed with ribbon, inscribed, 'NAVIGARE NECESSE EST'.
