Medal commemorating Sir Francis Drake (circa 1540-1596) and the Atlantic crossing, 1577. Obverse: Bust of the explorer Sir Francis Drake in armour and lace collar (three-quarter left). Legend: 'FRANZ DRAKE.' Reverse: Inscription, 'FRANZ DRAKE HIESS DER BRAVE MANN DER VOR 200 JAHREN VON ENGLAND NACH AMERIKA ALS KAPITÄN GEFAHREN UND DER ALS, ER ZURÜCKE KAM VON SEINEN WEITEN REISEN DIE GUTEN DINGER MITGEBRACHT DIE WIR KARTOFFELN HEISSEN. DIESE NÜTZLICHE FRUCHT VERDANKEN WIR DEMSELBEN STAATE, DER UNS JETZT AUSHUNGERN WILL. 1916 IRONIE DER WELTGESCHICHTE UND POLITIK.' (The inscription ends with an expression of gratitude for the usefulness of the potato, probably a reference to the British economic blockade of Germany during the First World War.)
